Once upon a time, a little girl was raised on the words Never Again.
She was raised to know the horrible things done to people-like-her, by people-not-like-her.
She was raised to feel the threat of those things in her own body and nervous system.
When the pattern began to repeat, she felt it in her body. Her nervous system froze in warning.
But Again had already happened, more than once, in the intervening years. Just not to people-like-her.
And recognizing a threat, it turned out, was very different from having the capacity to stop it.
Tsunami trumps humanity, and humanity trumps tsunami.
So too with human-inflicted horrors.
Tossing a single starfish back in the water makes a world of difference to that starfish.
Many people can rescue many starfish.
The ocean can hold the tears.
